The Austrian motorway vignette covers all motorways (Autobahnen, designated A-roads) and expressways (Schnellstraßen, designated S-roads) managed by ASFINAG. This network spans all nine Austrian federal states (Bundesländer) and connects major cities including Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, and Bregenz.
Federal roads (Bundesstraßen, B-roads) — no toll required
State roads (Landesstraßen, L-roads) — no toll required
Municipal streets — no toll required
Private roads — access rules vary
If you are unsure whether a specific road requires a vignette, use the ASFINAG route planner or check the ASFINAG website for the complete list of toll roads.
Border Crossings
Austria shares borders with Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Vignettes are available at most major border crossings. Key entry points with vignette sales include:
Salzburg/Walserberg (Germany–Austria on A1)
Kufstein (Germany–Austria on A12)
Suben (Germany–Austria on A8)
Nickelsdorf (Hungary–Austria on A4)
Spielfeld (Slovenia–Austria on A9)
Brenner (Italy–Austria on A13)
Arnoldstein (Italy–Austria on A2)
Local Nuances by Region
Vienna (Wien): The S1 Vienna Outer Ring is fully covered. The A23 Südosttangente is a major urban motorway covered by the vignette. Note that parking in Vienna requires separate city parking permits.
Salzburg: The A1 and A10 both pass through Salzburg. The A10 Tauern Motorway requires an additional tunnel toll. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a scenic route with its own separate toll — not ASFINAG.
Tyrol (Innsbruck): The A12 and A13 serve Tyrol. The Brenner Motorway (A13) has a full separate toll in addition to the vignette. The Arlberg Tunnel on S16 also has a separate toll.
Carinthia (Klagenfurt): The A2 and A10 serve Carinthia. The Karawanken Tunnel (A11) requires a separate toll for travel to Slovenia.
Styria (Graz): The A2 and A9 serve Styria. The Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnels on A9 require separate tolls.
Upper Austria (Linz): The A1, A7, and A8 serve Upper Austria. These are fully covered by the vignette with no additional tunnel tolls.
Vorarlberg (Bregenz): The A14 serves Vorarlberg. The Arlberg Tunnel (S16) connecting Vorarlberg to Tyrol requires a separate toll.
Lower Austria (St. Pölten): Extensive motorway network around Vienna. The A1, A2, A21, and S-roads are all covered by the vignette.
